Cone Beam Computed Tomography – A Great Improvement In Medical Science

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an imaging technology that has become very important in dentistry, other medical sciences, archaeology, biology, geophysics and even astrophysics. This method of scanning has become especially popular in in the diagnosis, treatment and planning of dentistry, mainly for dental implants, endodontia (root canal surgery) and orthodontia.

Special computer software collects data as the scanner rotates around the patient’s skull. The science of the image collection is the tomography and the laser light positioning mimics that of a projector beam up onto a screen which gives it it’s name. The actual pictures are formed through light waves that filter through the computer system that creates the image. Advances in this type of equipment provides a highly accurate diagnostic tool that allows medical personnel to see more accurately into the anatomy of a patient, assess any risks, and devise a plan treatment.
