The British government last night insisted that despite concerns that Magna’s purchase of GM Europe will see a disproportionate number of UK workers lose their jobs compared to their counterparts in the carmaker’s German operation, talks were continuing and it was not too late to secure a deal.

Mr Brown said in the Commons last month that total public spending will rise from £621bn this year to £672bn next, rising to £758bn in 2014. But Mr Cameron said once inflation is taken into account, spending will be cut in real terms by 0.3 per cent from 2011 onwards.
