What To Remember When Going Out On A Hike

There’s a place that my husband and I often go to hike. It is so magnificent! The name itself already puts our minds into turbo mode for fun not worrying about the problems and pressures in life. When we go to this special place, we are like wild nature children running along with the creeks that meander down and into what is called Wild Horse Canyon.

It has a steep, stone-hard trail adorned with small, soft plants and an assortment of living things along the edges. It has a enormous waterfall at the peak of the trail, it’s water flows into the canyon. Usually it takes about an hour to reach the top. Sometimes when there is a dry season, we can hike all the way to the bottom, which is even steeper and harder to navigate. It happened a year before during spring, we went trekking into the canyon on that beautiful morning. I packed a picnic lunch and loaded everything including a camera into our backpacks.

At the start of the hiking path, I observed a stick was leaning up against one of the huge pine trees along the way. I said to myself that this lovely stick could be ideal for a walking support and so I took it with us in our hike. I have never used a walking stick before and this was purely on impulse. The streams we passed were almost overflowing with water because the previous days had been raining. That day was so lovely. We had just about reached the bottom or as it were, the top of the waterfall. My partner went first and had gone across at the lowest portion of the small pool. The first cardinal rule when hiking is to look at your steps. At that point, I forgot to do that as I was about to get across. It was a tough fall. I had placed my foot on a rock when I passed through and it caught me off-balance because I was looking above. I was aware that I had seriously injured myself, my sprained ankle was throbbing in pain. I put up my feet and reflected on what just happened. All of a sudden it hit me, we were at the bottom of the canyon and we had to scale back out. Since we were at the bottom deep of the canyon, my husband and I were conscious that our cell phones would not get a signal. Wonderful. Because we had been there a lot, we were familiar of a short cut to the road. After I talked my husband into heading for the car while I took the other way to the road, we scaled up. In any case, I had my walking stick to aid me, credited to the person who was nice enough to leave it behind. It never really occurred to me that what I was in a very tough predicament but because of that walking stick, I was able to make it through. In conclusion, I went home with a gravely injured ankle and used crutches for numerous weeks.

For safety purposes when hiking, first rule – watch where you go. Always observe your environment. Bring your little first aid kit, water and some little meal to munch on. If not for my good pair of hiking boots, I believe I would have permanently injured my ankle. So, wear your sturdy hiking boots. Understand what you are about to do before actually doing it. If you stumble upon a rock or a tree root, or loose dirt, you could seriously injure yourself and even get killed if you tumble down the hill afterwards.

You will be able to avoid snakes if you know where your foot is landing on. Bring a companion when going out for a hike, allow yourselves to relax once in a while and do not hurry yourselves. Furthermore, resting lets you enjoy the wonderful view. If you are new to the hiking trail, stay on course, do not be so bold venturing out in the wild. Let someone know where you are going. Pack only what is needed and some emergency items just in case such as a handy flashlight, and perhaps a sweater. Remember to check the weather first before going out on a hiking trip. Be prepared and take your rain jacket, preferably the light one, with you if you know that there is a likelihood of a downpour.

Remember, to bring along a stick, it could really come on handy!
