The Beginnings of Jet Airways and Strategic Goals

With all that Jet Airways (India) has accomplished in the short seventeen years since they started in 1993, they should be given full credit. Their serious approach to accomplishing their goals is shown through their mission statement as well as the long list of awards they have won. They flatly state they will be the airline of choice in their home country of India and rise above all the standards of other airlines. Going that extra step, they have totally committed to offer the highest quality of reliable operations and service. Being the top world class airline of choice for domestic travel in the field of domestic air passenger service is a priority for Jet Airways. From what we have observed, this airline seems to be right on track to meet their goals.

Due to the decline of global economic conditions in the last decade, Jet Airways along with all the other commercial airlines have had to take serious measures. Decisions to suspend flight operations to London, Brussels, Shanghai and San Francisco California were made by the company. The expansion of the service destinations had been in the works until those measures were announced. While not being placed on permanent hold, all expansion ideas were suspended indefinitely. The assets of the company have had to be re-configured which included canceling orders for new aircraft, the leasing of aircraft and other necessary measures.

In April of 2007, Jet Airways purchased Air Sahara, now known as JetLite, at a price tag of $340 million USD.

A little more than a year after that, the parent company made public it’s plans to fold JetLite into the larger company. You see this all the time in the aviation industry. Originally, JetLite was intended to service the lower-priced flying market within India. It’s true that Jet Airways have certainly served this particular market well. When you consider the huge population of India, and while many are severely impoverished, there remains a sizable percentage for whom that type of service would be of benefit.

Those impressive figures were attributed to a burgeoning business climate plus the holiday season. The two million passenger number was due to the combination of the parent airline passengers with the passengers from the JetLite subsidiary. JetLite flew just under half a million passengers, and the balance was flown by Jet Airways. Jet Airways could finally be seeing an upswing to their business given the record setting in May 2011. Some business sectors are seeing some better times these days. Obviously that is a driving and considerable force for airlines since so many air travelers are in support of business.
