The US education system is like no other in the world in terms of size and diversity of experience and study. Classroom work ranges from cutting edge bio-ethics and technology to extensive study of classical literature and fundamental mathematics.
Unlike in many countries, schools are not just open to the wealthy or upper class elite. Education in public schools is excellent and an ever growing number of students are continuing on to college through an expansive state funded university system. However, with so many schools to choose from it can be overwhelming to the individual, especially coming from abroad, to know what will be the right school for them.
The number one question to answer is: What do I want to learn? This is the best place to start. While most schools offer a variety of programs and fields of study not all schools do everything as well. There are schools that specialize or have a reputation in a certain field, whether it is media broadcasting, or computer technology or languages. Often each school has a specialty, learn what that is.
There are many publications and online websites that will help you in your research. See what they have to say. Have the schools received awards for certain programs? What about the teachers at the school? Are they leaders in the field of study that you are interested in. This is an important aspect and one should take a good amount of time researching.
You do not want to find out that you are in to Marine Biology and then go to study at a school in Iowa. Once you have figured out what you want to study and which schools are considered the best in that field then prepare a list of the top 6 to 8 schools to apply to. That way you have a well rounded selection and can have some options depending upon the other criteria.
